Sears in her own words is “morally opposed” to protecting reproductive rights

VIRGINIA – New reporting from the Virginia Independent details how Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme record attacking reproductive rights earned her the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee, which is the oldest anti-abortion group in the United States.

Sears has still refused to answer questions  after leaving a handwritten note that said she is “morally opposed” to the constitutional amendment that would protect reproductive freedom in Virginia, including contraception, abortion, and IVF. She has also vowed to do everything in her power to end abortion in Virginia.

The Virginia Independent: National Right to Life Committee endorses slate of Republican candidates in Virginia

  • The oldest anti-abortion group in the US endorsed Winsome Earle-Sears for governor, John Reid for lieutenant governor, and Jason Miyares for attorney general
  • Early voting is underway in the 2025 elections in Virginia, and the Republican candidates for statewide office on Nov. 4 have all received the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee, the oldest and largest anti-abortion group in the nation.
  • Earle-Sears has a record of opposition to abortion. Most recently, in January 2025, she cast a tie breaking vote in the Virginia Senate that blocked Senate Bill 1105, which would have established the right to obtain and use U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved contraception, including condoms, intrauterine devices, and emergency contraception. The bill subsequently passed, but was vetoed by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
  • After a resolution was passed in the Senate to propose an amendment to the state constitution to protect reproductive rights, according to reporting by the Virginia Mercury, Earle-Sears signed it but then added a handwritten note saying, “I am morally opposed to this bill; no protection for the child.”
  • In a 2021 interview on Newsmax, the lieutenant governor said she supported a six-week abortion ban similar to one in Texas. According to the Winchester Star, Earle-Sears called abortion “genocide” and said she supported banning it in all cases, except when the life of the pregnant woman is in danger.
  • Earle-Sears is running for governor against Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who has consistently voted in support of abortion access and has said reproductive rights are one of the reasons she’s running.
